Orchids are the world's largest family of plants, the current count for the different number of species
out there is 26,000 and counting!
Are orchids poisonous?
There are literally thousands of different types of orchid, many of them are indeed edible, such as vanilla for
example. The Cat Fanciers Society and the Houseplants List both list orchid plants
as safe and not poisonous. Additionally, The American Medical Association Handbook of Poisonous and Injurious
Plants (AMAHPIP) does not list any orchid plants as being poisonous or harmful.
Cats do like to play, nibble and bite the blossoms of orchids and
although it's not poisonous to them, it should be discouraged. For two reasons, 1. it can ruin your plant! and
2. there may be herbicides or pesticides on the plant which could make them ill or sick.
However, i'm going to add a word of caution in here, because there are literally thousands of different kinds of
orchid out there (the last count was 26 thousand!), it's impossible to test every single one of them. If you have a
common species of orchid, you should be fine, however, if you have a rarer type, you may want to test it first.
This should prevent any unwanted harmful experiences.
